Hi guys, happy Saturday. Thanks for hanging out with me. So let me just say that I struggle with writers block quite often. Just so you know, I love working on music. I usually write and record my own songs. I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember. My mother started us out singing when we were very little. I’d say since I was six. I still remember my mom sitting at the piano and teaching my sisters and I, this song she wrote. We sang the background vocals. She taught us how to harmonize and hold a note.
Growing up we started a girls group. It was my two cousins and my sister and I. We performed for all family functions. We did talent shows and performances, until one day everyone realized that they didn’t want to sing anymore. Except for me, I definitely still wanted to pursue a music career, so I started working on my solo career. I did join a couple of other girl groups in my journey. I will admit that I have not achieved my goal in becoming an artist. I’m still working on it; and I don’t plan on giving up .
What I’ve been doing is trying to come up with some new material. It’s just me so I don’t usually have anyone to collaborate with. Some people might think it’s easy to write a song, but It really takes a lot of work. Thinking about what the song is about and what it should be titled. Coming up with the lyrics which would include 2 verses, a hook or chorus and the bridge or B-section. Plus you still have to come up with the melody and harmonies and vocal arrangements. It’s a lot of work and it takes a lot of precious time.
Every time I start a new song, no matter what, I tend to get writers block. I’m not sure why. Most times when this happens, I just record the parts I have and save it, then come back to the song when I have something to add. Honestly it may take me a couple of days, week or even a month before I come up with something new to add to the song. I wish, it wouldn’t take so long sometimes. What I need to do is come up with ways to help me expand my writing.
what I like to do is come up with a list of ideas that will keep me writing about the topic that I’m writing about. Sometimes I even have to write things out like I’m writing a story. It doesn’t always work out that way. Sometimes it’s best that I start with one word and draw a circle around it, then I’ll come up with some other words that I can associate with the one word in the circle. Which in turn will help me to spark a few more ideas for the writing process. I can also use this technique with any writing project I’m working on. It’s really rare that I can sit down and just write a song from beginning to end. I know their are also books you can buy to help you with your writing process.
I remember when I was dating my ex boyfriend, we took a trip to Manhattan and we walked into a bookstore and he bought two books for me. I can’t remember what both of them were called, but one of them was called successful lyric writing. I think it might be time to break out that book again. It has lots of exercises to help with your writing. So I’m asking you guys, if you love writing, what are some good tips to help with writers block?
